Femoral intertrochanteric fracture is also called the intertrochanteric fracture, which is a common facture in the aged population. With the aging of society, life expectancy extends as well as the incidence of osteoporosis, so the occurrence of intertrochanteric fractures in the aged is on the rise. Once intertrochanteric fracture happened, traditionally, conservative treatment will be taken and the patient must stay in bed, while the complications caused by bed rest, such as pulmonary infection, bedsore are deadly for the older people.

The department uses minimally invasive technology to treat different types of intertrochanteric fractures with different treatment principles.

For people with stable fractures, severe comminuted fracture or osteoporosis but not suitable for internal fixation, and the patients who ask for traction, tibial tuberosity or femoral supracondylar abduction booth bone traction should be used, and the patients will walk with walking stick in 6~8weeks after treatment.

For the older patient with stable or unstable fractures, no obvious contraindication in the operation, open reduction and internal fixation method are recommended. The purpose is to reach the anatomical reattachment as far as possible and restore the continuity of the femoral moment, to correct hip varus deformity and strengthen internal fixation, which can offer the patients earlier recovery and avoidance of complications.

In recent years, we have adopted many advanced fixation techniques such as the minimally invasive external fixator, Richard nail, dynamic condyle steel plate (DCS), proximal femoral rotation-resistant nail (PNFA) and attained good curative effect. Internal fixation can significantly reduce the pain caused by fracture, patients can get up early and reduce the complications of long-term bed rest, which can creating a good condition for function recovery. Additionally, by adopting this method, hip varus deformity rarely occurs and the patient’s life quality is improved. Meanwhile, through external and internal usage of Chinese herbal medicine, the hematoma is eliminated, pain is relieved, and the callus growth is promoted, creating a good condition for the patients to carry out the functional exercise and early loading. Combined with Chinese herbal fumigation and washing, adhesion is relaxed and spasm is relieved, which is beneficial to the recovery of hip function.
